Dear All, We have the honour to inform you that on 13-14 February 2003 Tallinn will host the Third Baltic Sea Women's Conference on WoMen and Democracy with the Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia as the main organiser. About 600 representatives of the public institutions, the research community and non-governmental organisations of the Baltic States, Nordic countries, Russia, Poland, Germany and the USA are expected to attend the conference. The conference is conceived as a follow-up to the 2nd Conference on WoMen and Democracy, held in Vilnius, June 2001, and the 2nd Baltic Sea Women's Conference, held in Helsinki, March 2000. The aim of the Conference is to encourage the dialogue between politicians, researchers, civil servants, NGOs and other experts in the field of gender equality. We do hope that the Conference will lead to closer cooperation between the participants and facilitate new important initiatives to empower women and to increasingly bring them into the mainstream of development. The Conference will discuss key issues related to the full voiced participation of women and men in the democratic processes addressing the following four main topics: ž women in power and decision-making ž violence against women ž women and the economy ž women and the media. The Conference will be held in three languages - Estonian, English and Russian. Registration A Conference registration form will be sent out together with the second announcement of the Conference at the end of September 2002. The national coordinator (contact person) will collect the registration forms from his/her country. Please contact your national coordinator for further information and registration forms. You will be informed of your national coordinator in the second announcement to be sent after the Second Meeting of the Planning Committee, which will be held on the 27th September in Tallinn. The conference registration form will also be available at the website of the conference from October 2002. Please note that the delegations should not exceed 30 persons. In addition to the politicians, researchers, civil servants and NGOs, the delegations should also include young people and representatives of ethnic minorities. The deadline for pre-registration is the 15st November. St-Petersburg Center on Gender Issues is intending to conduct this action in October 2002. In this connection we would like to ask everybody interested to assist in searching of sexism examples (discriminating, humiliating women's images) in mass media, press, advertising, TV, literature. That could be citations of politicians in press, on TV, billboards, photos, video, articles etc. We would be happy to receive both material subjects and information, references to citations specifying author, time and place of statements. Lexicon of Gender Terms is the first full (378 articles) lexicographic edition presenting Russian language gender terms as well as their English language versions. As gender terms we interpret words and word-combinations of the professional language, indicating special terms of gender researches and integrating scientific knowledge from the fields of philosophy, sociology, political and art science, psychology and linguistics, literary criticism, history and partly sexology. Lexicon contents lexicographic articles of 49 scientists and researchers from Russia and abroad. The Lexicon is created for scientists, teachers and students, journalists, representatives of power and governing bodies, participants of social movements. One of the targets of publishing the Lexicon is gender education of the Russian society aimed at forming of worldwide-accepted modern conceptions about equality of men and women. |
