COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
Christina Institute for Women’s Studies and Helsinki Summer School 2002 are
pleased to announce the Helsinki Summer School 2002 course
GENDERING GLOBALISATION
Helsinki, August 5th - 23th, 2002
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the different ways in which gender and globalisation are connected. The emphasis is on the gendered effects of globalisation in a local, Northern European context.
The course will start with an introduction to some central concepts and theories of Women’s Studies essential to understanding the problematic of ‘gendering globalisation’. This brief introduction will be followed by three themes: Theme I concentrates on cultural and religious traditions in the context of gender and globalisation. Theme II takes issue with women’s migration, especially trafficking in women in its various forms. Theme III focuses on the changes caused by globalisation in everyday life, for example, intimacy, emerging global chains of care between the North and the South, paid and unpaid domestic work, the labour market and so forth.
The course consists of lectures, group work and a written essay. The students are required to read selected literature relating to each theme (will be announced in advance). Also a short text, as well as questions relating to that text, will be given for the students to read and answer prior to coming to the course. The students should have completed at least two years of academic studies. Basic knowledge of women’s studies is required in order for the students to be able to take full advantage of this course.
The course is part of the annual Helsinki Summer School and one of this year’s 10 multidisciplinary courses provided by several universities in the Helsinki area. All the courses are designed for international university and college students. The courses are selected to represent three different themes: 1. New Technology, New Society?, 2. Focus on Regions and Cultures, 3. Global Issues of our Time (incl. Gendering Globalisation).
The language of study is English and the credits (6 ECTS) are transferable. Students may receive an additional four credits by completing the course entitled Finland in Focus.
The financial support given to the Summer School by the organising universities makes it possible to keep the cost of participating at a reasonable level. The registration fee is 150 EUR, the course fee for Gendering Globalisation is 150 EUR. If you register before May 31, 2002 you will receive a 50 EUR reduction in the registration fee. Accomodation is not included in the fees.
The total cost varies between 600-900 euros (incl. participation fees, accommodation with breakfast and daily student lunches) Helsinki Summer School provides also scholarships for talented students, to be given primarily to applicants from countries where local funds are more limited.
