3rd European Conference on Gender Equality in Higher Education
13-16 April 2003, University of Genoa, Italy
(previously at ETH, Zurich in 2000 and University of Helsinki in 1998)
Call for papers from academics, HE managers, equal opportunities officers, support staff, student representatives from Europe and around the world, to critically discuss issues, policies and practices in HE in relation to gender equality; as well as to network and establish collaborative links.
Following the conferenc, a document will be drawn up for national and European policy makers to highlight issues and make recommendations to further gender equality in HE.
Participants should submit an abstract of 300-500 words maximum specifying whether they intend to present an academic research paper or a discussion of practice: experiences, projects, issues and other areas relating to gender equality in HE.
Abstracts may be submitted under one of the following headings:
1. Mainstreaming gender equality in HE, e.g.
The role of university management; Resistance to the promotion of gender equality in HE
Strategies; Women▓s networks and organisations
Examples of positive action; The role of equal opportunities/diversity committees
Evaluation of governmental initiatives
2. Students and the curriculum, e.g.
The role of gender studies in promoting gender equality
Mainstreaming gender equality through the curriculum
Gender issues relating to student support and services
Gender segregation in different disciplines
3 Careers in HE, achieving a gender balance, e.g.
Breaking the glass ceiling: the use of quotas and targets to promote a fairer representation of underrepresented sex in senior posts
Women managers in academia
Academic masculinities
Academic age versus biological age; sex/ageism in academia
New career opportunities for women in HE
Reconciling work and family life
Equal pay
Formal appraisal practices in Higher Education: hindering or promoting gender equality?
4. Continuing Education from a gender perspective, e.g.
Women-friendly IT, distance learning, the virtual campus
The role of Continuing Education, wideing participation in HE
Improving women▓s opportunities in the labour market
5. Tackling Subtle Sexism, Sexual, Racial Harassment and Bullying in HE, e.g.
Developing strategies
Organisational response to formal complaints; follow up
Code of practice and procedures
Promoting and disseminating good practice

You will be informed whether your paper has been accepted by 10 September 2002 and asked to confirm your intention to take part. A provisional conference programme, with information on accommodation etc. will be circulated by 15 November 2002, final programme by10 February 2003.

250 Euro for those registering by 10 January 2003
300 Euro for those registering by 10 March 2003.
