INVITATION

Dear  Distinguished  Colleagues

Approved by the government of the People¡¯s Republic of China the International Symposium on Female anthropology and Matriarchal Culture in the Women-dominating Kingdom around the Lugu Lake is to be held on October 10th to 14th, 2002 in the ancient city, Lijiang (fixed for time being), which is named cultural heritage of the world by the United Nations. (Closing ceremony of symposium and social investigation   will be done around the Lugu Lake).

Around the Lugu Lake between Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces there are Mosuo people living in and still have kept a special  way  of  organizing their families, having  love  affairs  and  marriage. The housewife dominates family and children. In  this  area  where  everything  is dominated  by women, there is  no  patriarchy  and  the female and  male are  equal  on  condition that women are masters of the  family. They   practice  preliminary, romantic  and simple marriage system  that  is called Axia visiting-marriage (actually no marriage system at all). The visiting marriage  developed  the safe  and  equal  sex,  the  family  without father and husband. The future of the family belongs to the girls. So  it’s  the   living fossil  for  the study  of  the development  of  the  human being  society  or  called  the  Lugu  Lake  Women-dominating  kingdom..

In this kingdom, neither male dominate female nor female dominate male in the family, however it’s  a special society  model that  is  partner£ship instead of domination system. The Mosuo community was given the title of model community at  the  occasion  of  the  50th anniversary  of  the United Nations.  Now the  Lugu  Lake  is  listed  in  the  tourist  area  of  the National  level. The special relation between men and women, and society model provide typical situation and valuable materials for  the study  of  human society, relation  between  men  and  women, status and rights of women, marriage and families. To know others for knowing ourselves and know the past for today and tomorrow. It is so interesting a topic that I hope that we can  jointly  sponsor  an international symposium  on  female  sociology  and  Oriental  Women-dominating Kingdom.

Nowadays,  women are still in the state  in  which they  are  attached to men in political, economic position and sexual life. Many women  in the world are looked down upon and ill-treated. In some countries and areas female children  are  facing  the  problem of  living. If we do  not pay  special  attention  to it, the  sexual banana  of  female  and  male will be lost. But Humanitarianism and human rights are found and  in full swing in this community. The  matriarchal  families  provide  us with  much that we  can  make use of  it solving   the  problems  in  modern world. It  is  also  an  inspiration  to  us  about  the  marriage  and  family  in  the  future. If we make a study about interpersonal relations and sexual partners  in  the  Mosuo  community, it  will  show  profound  great significance  in  recognizing  women,  promoting   the   equality   of  women  and  men.

With  best  wishes!
